A cardiovascular operating room (CVOR) nurse—also called a perioperative cardiovascular nurse—assists in patient care before, during, and after cardiovascular surgical procedures. The typical responsibilities of a CVOR nurse are:

  • Prepare patients for cardiovascular procedures in collaboration with the surgical team
  • Maintain a sterile field in the operating room with infection protocol in mind
  • Monitor patient vitals, including cardiac rhythms during surgical procedures
  • Transfer patients into the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and monitor patient recovery 
  • Administer intravenous medication and carry out pain management plans
